High-Speed Broadband Access for Iowa

The IJOBs or bonding bill SF376 was one of the final actions of the 2009 Legislative Session. The bill includes an appropriation of $25 million to the Iowa Telecommunications and Technology Commission (ITTC), in conjunction with Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED), and Iowa Utilities Board (IUB), to establish a joint governance board to promote the deployment and sustainability of high-speed broadband access in the State.

For more information please visit the Board's website at: http://broadband.iowa.gov.

March 31 Update - The funds previously appropriated to the Iowa Telecommunications and Technology Commission (ITTC) for the Iowa Broadband Deployment Competitive Grant Program were removed from the state budget in the final days of the 2010 legislative session. The Iowa Broadband Deployment Governance Board was not eliminated, but the funds it was to disburse through grants to broadband infrastructure projects were eliminated. Staff from the three state agencies that support the Board (Iowa Utilities Board, IUB; Iowa Department of Economic Development, IDED; and the ITTC) will meet to determine next steps.

The Iowa Broadband Deployment Governance Board was also charged with creating a comprehensive plan for the deployment and sustainability of high-speed broadband access in the state of Iowa. As the Board receives the mapping and other information from Connect Iowa, the Board will move forward with the creation of a plan for deployment of broadband in Iowa.
